Only 2024 to 2026: each region’s share needs NESO’s regional wind figures, and before 2024 they pass the site’s check on fewer than 95% of days.

Where, 30 September – 6 October (2 days behind): Scotland 49.7% of its wind paid to stop, England and Wales 0.5%.

About these figures

The figure · left out · Scotland, England and Wales · since 1 April · the wind farms · years and months · other published figures

The figure

Wind that had a bid accepted by the system operator to reduce its output — what is often called curtailment. On Thursday 8 October, 48 wind units were paid to stop, 88.3% of the volume at Scottish wind farms, and 88.3% of it was flagged as a system action, almost always because the network could not carry the power south.

The figure is the sum of Elexon’s settled bid volumes for every BM unit Elexon classes as wind, so it is exact for those units rather than an estimate. Settlement can restate a day; the page takes the settled figures each time the site is updated.

Left out

The 293.6 GWh is what reached the grid (279.8 GWh, Elexon’s half-hourly wind generation) plus what was paid to stop (13.8 GWh). It leaves out wind on local networks, which never receives a bid; output a wind farm held back itself; and output a wind farm had already taken out of its own notified plan before any bid. Figures that estimate those are larger than this one.

Scotland, England and Wales

Most of it is behind the network’s limit between Scotland and England: NESO’s day-ahead plan for 10 October put that boundary at 2,800 to 5,300 MW. Limits inside Scotland bind too. NESO publishes boundary limits only as a plan made the day before, not what flowed, so the page shows no flow across a boundary and no share of its limit.

For 30 September – 6 October, Scotland had 518.5 GWh paid to stop against 524 GWh metered (49.7%), and England and Wales 3.6 GWh against 734 GWh (0.5%). National Energy SO publishes its regional metering several days late, so this block runs behind the headline, and a day is used only when NESO’s total is within 3% of Elexon’s with every half hour present. Each wind unit is counted in Scotland or in England and Wales by where it connects. Since 1 April: Scotland 33.0%, England and Wales 0.6% (186 days).

Since 1 April

15.4% of available wind was paid to stop: 5,703 of 37,132 GWh over 191 days.

The wind farms

A wind farm here is the wind units Elexon lists for one site, grouped by their National Grid names; Elexon publishes no wind farm names, so the names are this site’s own. Two rows of the all-time list are Elexon’s aggregated units for small wind farms, not single wind farms.

Years and months

A year’s or a month’s share is its wind paid to stop divided by that plus the wind that reached the grid, on the days Elexon’s wind generation is complete; some days before 2024 are missing, and the tooltip says how many.

Other published figures

For power turned up elsewhere by fuel and detail for each wind farm, see Robin Hawkes’s GB Transmission Constraints. His figures count the actions the system operator flagged at the time and run about 2–4% below NESO’s own series; this page sums Elexon’s settled volumes, so the two differ a little.

How figures are marked. A figure with no mark is measured; an estimate is hatched; a forecast is dashed. A total or a share with the solar estimate inside it says so: incl. est. solar.
