About GB Electricity
The provenance of the data, every endpoint the page calls, the licences that come with them, and where the project stands.
Daily averages from this site’s own history. Imports count a cable’s day only when it flowed into Britain.
Every few minutes, Great Britain’s electricity system rearranges itself — wind rises, gas throttles back, a cable to Norway reverses direction. This dashboard shows that happening, from the public data, as it happens.
The pages
- Dashboard — the whole system on one page: what is generating, what the country is drawing, how clean it is and what is changing.
- Generation — every fuel ranked and shown as shares every five minutes, the mix back to 2016, wind against its forecast, and the records.
- Interconnectors — the ten cables to Europe and Ireland link by link, each with its direction, its share of capacity and a page of its own.
- Power stations — nuclear, gas, biomass, wind and solar station by station, from what each unit has notified and its export limit.
- Meet the fuel types — eleven real sites drawn as one map, one for each way Britain makes, stores or imports electricity.
- Demand — two demand figures, not one: what the transmission system can see, and what the country used once rooftop solar is added back in.
- Carbon intensity — how clean the mix is this half hour, each fuel's share of the carbon, and your own area by postcode.
- System — the grid's frequency, its spare capacity, and the imbalance and market prices.
- Batteries — every grid battery in the balancing mechanism: what it is doing now and what it has been instructed to do.
Every chart's figures download as a timestamped CSV from its own panel.
There is no account and no cookie. Cloudflare, which hosts the site, keeps an anonymous count of visits. Live figures come from Elexon, NESO and Sheffield Solar through a small relay on this site that passes their data on unchanged; if the relay cannot be reached, your browser asks them directly.
Sources: Elexon Insights (BMRS), the NESO Carbon Intensity API and Sheffield Solar PV_Live. The provenance, the endpoints called and the licences behind the data are set out below; how each figure is derived, what these feeds cannot see and the places this data is most often misread are on the Methodology page.
Inspired by
GB Electricity takes inspiration from existing public grid dashboards, particularly GridWatch and Kilowatts.io. Their live generation, demand and interconnector views helped shape the scope of this dashboard.
The National Grid ECR Dashboard is a useful reference for a different kind of data product: clear filtering, explicit data coverage, connected versus accepted capacity, geographic breakdowns and downloadable data. Those ideas may inform future GB Electricity capacity and network views rather than the live system page itself.

Data sources and attribution
Great Britain, not the UK. The live figures on this site cover Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales), because that is the electricity system Elexon and NESO run. Northern Ireland’s grid is run with the Republic of Ireland’s as a single market, and appears here as the Moyle link. Page titles say “UK” because that is what most people search for; the history pages cover the UK because DESNZ’s records do.

The coastline on the Interconnectors map is from Natural Earth (1:10m cultural vectors), which is in the public domain. Cable positions on that map are drawn between published landfalls and are not survey data.
Interconnector capacities and the links in development are from the NESO Interconnector Register, used under the NESO Open Data Licence. Supported by National Energy SO Open Data.
The regional wind figures in “Wind paid to stop” on the Generation page are from the NESO Data Portal (operational metered wind output), used under the NESO Open Data Licence. Supported by National Energy SO Open Data.
